Meeting the network: I-SENSE ICCS

Today the category “Meeting the network” brings us to Athens, Greece were ICCS is based.

The Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS), is a non-profit Academic Research Body established in 1989 by the Hellenic Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs to carry out applied Research and Development activity in the areas of telecommunications, computer systems and their applications in a variety of research themes. ICCS is linked to the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and is hosted by the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (SECE).

In EuroVR, ICCS is represented by one of its research groups, the Intelligent System Engineering and Novel Simulations Environment (I-SENSE) Group, founded in 2002 by Dr. Angelos Amditis as a continuation of various smaller research groups already active from the early ‘90s.

“We are constantly working in state-of-the-art   research in Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality, with an eye in novel concepts.”

ANGELOS AMDITIS
Honorary Vice-President, EuroVR Association
Research Director, Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS), Athens, Greece.
Since 2002, Dr. Amditis has been the founder and the Director of the I-SENSE Research Group of ICCS. He was one of the initiators of the EuroVR Association, which was established as a continuation of the INTUITION Network of Excellence, and he has served as the President from September 2010 until March 2016.

The I-SENSE Group, which consists of more than 100 researchers of various ranks, focuses on a number of scientific and research areas with main applications on Intelligent Transportation Systems, Virtual and Augmented Reality, Smart Integrated Systems and Communication, and Security and Crisis Management. Specifically, in the areas of Virtual and Augmented Reality, I-SENSE Group’s interest and expertise lies on the VR/AR/MR implementation in novel concept areas with extensive work in designing and implementing versatile anthropocentric applications for industrial use and/or training.
In this context, the Group has already developed several applications covering a wide range of domains, including remote training support for professionals, remote maintenance and assembly support, simulation and training in hazardous environments, game development for rehabilitation or for cognitive purposes and others.

I-SENSE has also worked in the frontiers of VR trying to bring this technology into new concepts, such as its usage within airplanes, teleoperation facilitation in space missions, or its integration into future road vehicles.

Lately, the Group is focusing on Cultural Heritage activities too, aiming to facilitate the active involvement of citizens in all Cultural Heritage aspects.
Since its foundation, the I-SENSE Group has participated in more than 120 National and European research initiatives and projects and currently is involved in 40 projects serving as the Coordinator at the following ones: COREALIS, ICT4CART, ELVITEN, IN-PREP, ΗYPERION, RESIST, SAFEPASS, CYBER-MARE, DIONE.

The Group has also been involved in several industrial projects and has a significant presence in the organisation of international conferences in several areas of research, including VR.
